Another Contest coming!!! MAY 4th!!
The library has so much enjoyed these trivia contests, that we are planning another one! May 4th is field day at Northside, and everyone already knows we plan a huge book give-away! The library is a station in the rotation of field day every year, and it is a pit stop during the day's events where students can take break, rest, relax in the air conditioning, and best, select a free book of their choice. That's right folks, our library spends roughly $800 to set up a book fair where kids bring no money, but take away a free book! (This is one of the ways we use proceeds from our book fairs. And best, PTO does a matching cost to help!) I would have to say this is probably one of the most favorite stations at field day! Students seem very interested in the contests lately, so our next one will result in 2 winners on field day. We haven't decided what the contest will be, but there will be a drawing for two winners, one from the early childhood grades and one from our upper grades. What will the winners get?? Each student who wins will get to select FIVE books on field day instead of just one. How cool is that?? I am now so looking forward to field day! If anyone has a suggestion for this contest, let me know. I'm game for ideas!

Hey Cathy! I read this right after you posted. Perhaps you can make a worksheet of some kind that makes your kids, especially the upper grades, go into opac and read about the books nominated for next year. It could be some sort of "matching" style page, and the only way they could match titles to descriptions is to read about them on OPAC. Maybe you could work with the teachers and get them to devote part of their computer time to begin working on it. Isn't OPAC on all the school computers? Who knows, but maybe they will get excited and begin reading the books before school is out, or over the summer. For the younger kids, use a similar approach as the last contest. Provide book covers with the title hidden or darkened out. See if the kids can match the book title to its cover. The drawback here though is that you'd probably have to "grade" these entries, which depending on how many turn one in, could be a lot! But it might be worth it to generate interest in the nominees.
